It drives me crazy how they'll argue with me about the problem I see RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. There's some kind of problem with my cable--starting a week ago, I lost my cable picture and for about 3 days, my broadband connection. The latter eventually came back but I still have no picture, and the remote doesn't work on the cable box either. When I turn to channel 3 (the access channel for the cable signal), I see a very faint picture through a lot of static but I can't change the channel either with the remote or pressing the cable box channel function directly.

I've made a couple of calls now to Time-Warner and both CSRs would interrupt me and tell me the problem must be with my TV--I'd have to grimly talk through them and say "No, I'm watching broadcast TV and geting a picture. No, I can't change the channel. Yes, I'm watching a broadcast channel right now." Just listen to me and don't dismiss me! Damn, your stupid service costs enough as it is, the least you can do is provide polite customer service.

I went through this kind of crap with Time Warner too many times. I switched to RCN, and have had no problems for over 2 years.

When I lived in Jersey City, one owner of my apartment complex held a lot of stock in RCN, so he had it written into our leases that we could only get our cable from RCN. (Nice.) RCN knew this, and placed anyone in our buildings last on their priority lists, because we couldn't take our business elsewhere. We literally went months without cable when I first arrived, because they couldn't be bothered to come out to our building and fix some crossed wires.

When some tenants sued the building management, a judge ruled that the monopoly was unfair, and the complex had to allow competition in. Comcast got there first, and I don't think anybody stuck with RCN. They called us constantly, begging us not to switch and offering us all sorts of incentives to stay, but we'd learned how much they cared about their customers. It was a lot of fun to hear them beg after we'd begged them to come out and fix our cable so often!

I'm glad they're better in New York, tho', and as I'm not impressed with TWC at all, maybe I'll give 'em another chance...

Can I even do that? I thought TW was the only cable I could get?

I have my broadband through TW as well--can I switch just my cable?

That would be awesome if that's so. I grew up in a land where your cable service was dictated by geography, not whether or not you wanted it.
