History on the LIRR
Jan. 22nd, 2007 11:09 amMy mother is in town staying with me, and Saturday we took the train to Merrick to visit my brother. On the way we approached Kew Gardens, and I thought "that's where Kitty Genovese was murdered." Then I remembered that the LIRR parking lot was right next to her building--and that building is so distinctive (it has the Tudor-style, sort of half-timbered design), I thought I might be able to see it from the train. And I did--I spotted the Tudor building, and the taller apartment building behind it--the one where the 38 witnesses heard and saw what was happening and did little or nothing. Unbelievable. I told Mom to look out the window--that was history.
That poor woman. Such a pretty little thing too, from her pictures. I hope her soul is at peace.
