Here is the email I just sent to Time-Warner/NY1:
There's a holiday ad that airs on NY1 a lot--it has this happy holiday montage (which is quite nice), followed by the sponsor's name, then a homemade video of a little kid and his sister opening a present. What makes this ad notable is the insane, rage-inducing amount of screaming this kid emits after opening his present. I HATE this ad. It makes me never want to give a child a gift again--the kid's reaction is completely over the top and obnoxious, and I CANNOT--repeat, CANNOT--stand his stupid, piercing, hateful screaming. I want to slap whatever overpriced toy he got out of his hand and step on it, and then take him to a soup kitchen. It just reinforces the retail-driven meme that Christmas is all about the presents--which kind of negates the lovely holiday montage that precedes it.
Obviously I can't write the sponsor with this complaint because they'll just be happy that I remember the ad. So I'm telling you--literally every time I see this ad is on, I reach for the remote. Or I turn off the TV. Every time. You are losing a viewer every time this ad airs. And I'm sure it's not just me.
Please, for the love of God (and your ratings), stop airing this ad.
Yours truly,
A generally loyal viewer of NY1
