Hamas has won in the Palestinian elections, which is bad news for the peace process in Israel. Hamas has declared in no uncertain terms that they hate Israel, and will not recognize it, and they have claimed responsibility for many suicide bombings during the intifadah. I had such hope after Arafat died--I truly believed the Palestinian people wanted peace and Abbas could make it happen.

My friend djeber says it nicely:

Here are some thoughts: the Palestinians were given a choice, and now they've shown the world what they stand for. I don't care how corrupt Fatah was or how many schools Hamas built. None of that changes the fact that the Palestians have put into power a fundamentalist, terrorist organization dedicated to the destruction of Israel. As such, I now just hope that they give Israel an excuse to wipe them off the planet. And if some civilians get caught in the crossfire, well, they put Hamas in power, so now they can reap the consequences. I won't lose any sleep over it.

Well, at least we (what is, Israel) know what we're dealing with--the gloves are off and Israel can continue to build that wall. Jesus. Yay for democracy?

When Arafat was dying, I chatted with a Palestinian deli owner near my office. Upon learning that he was Palestinian, I asked how he felt about Arafat. He said, "I hope he dies, and I hope all of his people die, too. Then maybe we can get started on peace over there." He went on to tell me that most Palestinians are tired of fighting, and just want to be able to send their kids to school without worrying about bombs or snipers. Unfortunately, he continued, many of the fundamentalists are very rich, and can offer politicians a lot of money to promote their narrow world view. They can also offer a poor people a lot of money to carry out violent acts. But the average Palestinian, he said, would give up any amount of land if it meant peace. It's just the militant fringe who will not.

I guess this election disproves that theory.

*sigh*

Yeah. It's all fucked now.
Wow. The Palestinians are stupid. And I, for one, am
sick of hearing how much they suffer whilst blowing
themselves up in shopping centers and on busses. Because
It's about to be rainin' human flesh in Tel Aviv again.
I say carpet-bomb the mother fuckers and wipe them out
like cockroaches.
They've had many opportunities to enjoy a peaceful existence
in the region but they refuse to get hold of themselves.
From now on I don't give a shit what happens to the Palestinians.
As a matter of fact, given that they've just institutionalized
terrorism as government our job is to wipe them off the face of the earth.

Yeah, I think they're going to lose enormous credibility because of this. Between this and the recent unrest at the Egyptian Gaza border (http://www.myantiwar.org/view/68901.html)...I hate to say it--sort of--but the Palestinians cannot govern themselves. They're a mess.

And they were so close to statehood six years ago - they got their own Internet domain and everything (.ps).

They Israelis at my company were talking about it. My boss stated, "We got through a lot of things and this, too, we will get through."
