After escaping from the rubbery, possibly transgender guy who hit on me yesterday, I got waxed, and then walked home. I was exhausted but I pulled myself together for Heidi's housecooling party. Her soon-to-be-erstwhile apartment is quite pretty--a cool little railroad apartment with some great features. Heidi has an excellent eye for color--I look forward to seeing how she paints the new place. I got there around 7:00 and hung out with Duncan, Mike, Heidi, Chris and Paula for awhile. Oh yeah, and Doug :) *mwah* It was fun, just relaxing hanging out with people. Mike apologized for forgetting (again) to bring me his copy of The Fountainhead and I scolded his lack of Objectivism. I said "Are you expecting me to pick up the slack for you?" I should have called him Moochie Welch.

After awhile we dispersed, and Doug and I hung out some more, drinking and watching the Olympics. Watching them in the Internet era is TORTURE--I've already been spoiled about much of tonight's program. I CANNOT let myself read the news tomorrow, as I really want to enjoy the women's gymnastics team program. Go USA!

Oh, and can I say how much Iran SUCKS? Way to live up to those Olympic ideals, guys!

"Entering the Olympics means sharing the values of the Olympic movement," he said. "We value peace and we cannot tolerate discrimination. This is very important for the future of the IOC, for the future of judo."

Right. Because Iran today is such a bastion of tolerance and non-discrimination.

Fuckers.

We boycotted the entire games in 1980 to make a political statement.

And to spite us, the Soviet bloc boycotted the games in 1984. Except for Romania, who showed up to make a political statement.

One of the best moments in Olympic history, and the beginning of the end of the Soviet empire.

Yes, so pretty much everybody sucks.
Not just Iran.

Well, the difference is, Iran showed up and just refused to compete against an Israeli athlete. We (and the USSR, et al) didn't compete at all. I don't think we're on the same moral plane as Iran.

I don't believe in moral relativism--that argument has never made any sense (and frankly seems very simplistic) ecause situations are different. In this case, Iran showed up--they just didn't want to play the bad ol' Israelis. If they decided to boycott the Olympics because the Israelis are competing, fine, but don't show up (thus paying at least lip service to Olympic ideals) and then try to change the rules.

Furthermore, Iran along with many of its fellow Arab nations has a history of anti-Semitism--that is, anti-all Jews, everywhere. They don't just have a problem with Israel WRT the Palestinians, they deny its right to exist, and they want Judaism eliminated.

They're fucked up.

Oh, they're fucked up, no doubt. I wasn't making a comment about Iran's backwards-ass culture being somehow right.

Just that politics in the Olympics is nothing new, and no matter what your point of view, it's the players that get the shaft. That's what sucks.

You're right about the politics. Have you read about the men's basketball final in '72? That's fucked up. The US team STILL hasn't accepted their silver medals.

Just did. That's really disgusting.

I think I would have refused the medal even if it wasn't the Soviets to which I had lost. But then again, the opposing coach might not have been so demanding.
