depressing weather

The temperature is really low today and it's hitting me hard. I can barely keep my eyes open, and all I want to do is bundle up, watch TV and eat grilled cheese sandwiches. Hate winter. Can't wait until spring.

But then, there's something about actually being able to hear your breath hit the ground that makes winter a wonderful season. I nearly froze tonight (wearing, as I am wont to do in January, a single layer of relatively light clothing -- although long-sleeved, for a change -- and a spring/fall leather jacket) and it was perfect! For the first time this year, I remember what it was like growing up in Minnesota, where the weather is like this for two solid months without interruption. Nothing wakes me up in the morning, or makes me feel so alive. I can forego coffee in weather like this -- who needs caffeine to stay awake? Winter is beautiful. Bring it on, and let it stay for a while!

See, it has exactly the opposite effect on me--my energy gets very depressed. Yesterday I felt as though I were moving through vegetable oil. And dammit, I don't feel sexy. I cannot feel sexy when I have to swathe my body in layers and layers of clothing. Not to mention, when you're as little as I, it's difficult to do things practically when you're so overdressed--eg., purses slide off my shoulders, I can't move my arms very well. I feel like Ralphie in A Christmas Story.

Every year at this time I fanticize about moving to New Orleans and living in sybaritic, warm, subtroical, jazz-infused splendor.

New Orleans sounds wonderful... all the warmth and color would be welcome in this time of the year when they are sorely lacking in this area of the country.
