Windows 98. The only antivirus software I have is what came with the bundled package (Norton version whstever--bought the computer in January of '99). I haven't installed any new software or hardware in at least the last six months.
You might want to download new virus signatures from www.securityresponse.symantec.com and run a full scan. Of course, you'd need to get back on the internet first.
You should probably also consider upgrading to a more recent and secure OS. I have a perfectly legal, licensed copy of Windows 2000 that I'm not using. Or, go for the upgrade to XP, which should be on sale somewhere for under $100.
There are a few viruses out there that attempt to hijack your modem and make it dial expensive 900 numbers, so if I were you, I'd call the phone company and check, unless you've received a bill since the problems began. It's also possible you picked up one of those and it's just not compatible with Windows 98, but still screws up the modem.
It's also possible it isn't a virus at all, of course.
I've got no Thursday night plans, so if you'd like me to take a look at it, let me know.
I'll drop by with Windows 2000. It might be problematic for you though, because plug-and-play doesn't work too smoothly in 2000. XP, at this point, is pretty secure and stable though. We can discuss tomorrow.
What's a good time? I'll call you later for the address.

Yes, if you could come over tomorrow night, that would be great.
*Sigh*
