One of the things they don't address is that current insurance programs force you to pay your copays up front, but hospitals aren't allowed to even ask to pay before they treat you. There are a lot of people who play the system for that reason.

All in all, though, a fantastic article that makes a lot of excellent points.

I thought it was really interesting too. It seems clear the guy has some psychological problems and is "pushing" at least some of his symptoms for attention--it's difficult for me that a person sick enough to call 911 all the time, is yet not too sick to get out of the ambulence and grab a cab to another hospital. (That really is outrageous, what a ridiculous waste of taxpayer money.) If he could get cabs in the first place, why not take them to the ER instead of ambulences all the time? And as sick as he claimed to be, still didn't take ownership of his condition (medication, etc.).

I should say, that seems obvious to me, but you probably see this sort of thing quite often--do you think he has that Munchausen syndrome?

We see it all the time. And I think it's 2 things...a bid for attention and a sensebof entitlement. "I earned this" "my tax dollars pay your salary" "if I hold out they'll see I won't live in the group home so they'll put me in my own place" and so on and so forth...

He's probably also in denial...which is why he won't take ownership and see a regular doctor.

Probably not Munchausen...those people tend to not really be ill at all...but they make themselves sick or fake being sick for attention. He has legit issues and ignores them.

We see it all the time.

That must be maddening. I can't imagine how you keep your cool--just reading that article raised my blood pressure.
