PLEASE tell me this is a joke:

Threatened little man just has to try to spoil the good feeling from last week.

Paula, do not read, your head will explode.

Some diligent soul in the comments section dug up an address: Lafayette French Pastry
Manhattan, 26 Greenwich Ave, New York, NY 10011, USA (Greenwich Village). Now I know where NOT to go.

I saw this yesterday and at first I thought perhaps that kind of cookie might have been something that came out of France in the La Revue Nègre days and, in its now outdated context, was actually thought of to be an inoffensive novelty. But no, after much Googling it seems the jerk thought of it himself.

This has been on 1010Wins for a while. Apparently his neighbor store owner is a true African-American, they've been friends for real, and the neighbor vouches for the baker NOT being a racist. The way the news bit was edited, though, I got the feeling his neighbor also vouches for the baker as being a dumbass, but apparently they're still friends, so...

Come on. (Not you, the apparently Pollyanna-ish neighbor.) I find it impossible to believe he does not know exactly what he's saying when he says "Like Lincoln, he will get what's coming to him." Besides, if you watch the video, he calls them "[N-word] cookies" to one customer. There's also a testimonial from another customer that the baker has indeed expressed racist views.

Whether or not he originally meant them in a racist way, when everyone's telling him "Dude, this isn't cool," his stolid, bland denials are infuriating.

Ok, see, not admitting he made a bad call is infuriating. When a bunch of people tell you "you did wrong!" you own up and apologize for it, not stick to your guns.

Sorry to break it to you, Clara.
Head 'sploded last week.
Somebody already hipped me to this fool.

Maybe we SHOULD actually do a boycott.
There's no shortage of French pastry shops in this town. Do we really need this one?

Racist/dumbass in Greenwich Village. So much for "know thy customer." Hmph.

Vote with your feet, put him out of business... Good. I'm actually somewhat pleased that "throw him in jail" hasn't come into the discussion yet. This is a sign of progress, IMHO.

Voting with your feet. I like that.

Why throw him in jail?
Let's throw him to the lions.

The update says he has apologized for his remarks, but you and I both know he's not sorry. Not one bit.

I will continue to spread the word about this buffoon.
I refuse to let him get rich off of me or anyone I respect.

In the Village, no less! That's just maddening.

Amen.

You know me well enough -- I'm a pretty hard-core libertarian. So, as offensive as this lout may be, I can't fault him for being himself, as long as he's not physically harming anyone or depriving anyone of their freedoms.

There's no right to not be offended (as it conflicts with the right to free speech, which is guaranteed everyone, including fools). So bake your damned cookies. But don't expect mad profits.

Especially this week.

And especially in Greenwich Village.

Ever heard of a business plan?

D'oh!
