Um, okay. I was thinking about using the movers Jason and Paula have used, L&L Movers, and recommended highly, but they're quoting me around $800. I was thinking closer to $400-600--that is quite a bit more than I think I can justify, especially since you need to add tips onto that. Aaaaugh!! Er, can anyone help me move if it comes to that? I will provide coffe and donuts beforehand, and dinner afterward. I wanted just to pay the movers and walk into my new apartment without dealing with all of this, but $800 is a lot, especially when I'm putting on a flippin' play this summer.

The other day I popped into my landlord's building to sign the moveout papers. The girl at the desk said "okay, so you'll be moving out on or before July 1, correct?" I said yes, on July 1, then I asked, to clarify, "I can move out on July 1, right?" She said yes, that's what she said, then she went into the office to talk to the manager--she came out and said "actually, you need to be out by June 30." The thing is, because of all the renovations happening in the new building, I really can't move in before July 1 and even that's pushing it. I asked Mike about this, who said this sort of thing goes on all the time but this does seem odd. Who moves overnight? Has anyone else heard of this, where a landlord enforces the lease to the T? I asked the guy at L&L and he said that sounded odd--that a person would have to put stuff into storage for one day, and be charged for a double move. Has anyone else dealt with this?

I'd be glad to help move.

Thanks, I think I'll need it!

If it helps at all, L&L have a reputation of coming in under their estimate. Did the guy come in and take a look at the place? That's usually what they do.

He said since I'm moving within Manhattan (that is, I'm not starting out from New Jersey), he has to do the estimate over the phone. I probably over-estimated, but I think Jason said your move was like $5-600, which is why I'm chagrined. I can't imagine I have much more stuff than you do--I'm one person in a tiny 1-bedroom.

which is exactly what I was thinking.
And you're not going to another state. Although they will have to travel from there.
Even so, there's no way yours could cost more than ours. My thought, anyway.

I'd be delighted to help you...

It does seem odd that they wouldn't give you the flexibility of a single day. It's not like they're going to rent the apartment to someone else on that very day!

I say you just move out on the 1st if you can. What are they going to do? Evict you?

They can withhold the security deposit, because that's technically breaking the lease. This is the same management company that turned off the heat on the weekends last December (you know, those weekends where the temperature went down to 20 degrees (http://ceebeegee.livejournal.com/2005/12/15/)). I can see them doing that--I honestly feel they've been trying to drive people out of the building so they can jack up the rent. I had terrible problems with holes in the roof (http://ceebeegee.livejournal.com/354154.html) and other problems. So I want to get that security deposit back.

If it's July 1st I can certainly be there in the morning. I don't know yet how late I can go, though.

When L&L moved us they came in $400 under. They tend to quote high as a rule just in case so that they never come in over. I think that they will come in at $600.

I used Van Girls, they were cheap and great. I can't remember how many flights up you are, though... when duncan called them they said they only did a certain number of flights. they did me 3 hours for either 300 or 400, and they were fantastic, and i felt good about giving my money to women. women who spoke english.

that whole one-day thing IS stupid...although legally they couldn't take your whole security, they might pro-rate the rent for a single day. (monthly rent divided by 30) frankly, it might be worth it to offer them the pro-rata rent up front. they can't rent it out right away anyway, they have to repaint and stuff.

To contact Van Girls, email vangirlsnyc@hotmail.com or call 917-804-3791

They are bastards. I find it difficult to advise you on the July 1 issue. I know if 'twere ME I'd move on the 1st. I always kiss my deposit good-bye because landlords, in my experience, will ALWAYS find a reason to keep it. But that's just my experience, not advise really.

And I'd help with the move if I could but my carpal tunnel wouldn't allow that. It's been regressing this week and I've had to start taking medication for the pain again. Even though I'm never without my brace at work. Anyway...

I'll be happy to be part of a Friday night crüe or to offer pre-move temporary storage in my apartment.
