The Nanny Diaries
Apr. 19th, 2006 10:43 amCasting for The Nanny Diaries. There's some weird stuff in that article. First of all, "Annie" (called simply "Nanny" in the book) does not come from a working class New Jersey family--she comes from a genteel, well-educated family who are not as rich as the Xs, but certainly not working-class. Second--Paul Giamatti as Mr. X?? The hell? I love me some Paul G., but he is all WRONG for that part--he's too shlumpy, sad-sack, schmucky. You need a shark, a decent-looking guy who is totally self-interested and focused on the deal, the kill. Richard Gere would be perfect. Laura Linney isn't too bad as Mrs. X (although she doesn't seem *exactly* the type--I would prefer someone taller and thinner, she should look as though her cheekbones would slice right through you--but Scarlett Johannson is all wrong for Nanny. She's too curvy, too overtly sexy (Mrs. X would never hire someone like that), and too much as though she'd fight back--you need someone who is genuinely sweet who bonds with Grayer, and also swallows her anger towards the Xes. It's a funny book, but its heart is very sad, because the parents really do not give a shit about their kid--only Nanny loves Grayer, and he knows that.
Anne Hathaway is playing the leading role in another chick lit book that's being filmed, Andrea in The Devil Wears Prada, and I think she and Scarlett Johannson should've traded roles. Anne would be perfect for Nanny, and she's too sweet to play Andrea; whereas Scarlett would be much better suited as Andrea.
