Ladies Figure Skating Results

I am disappointed Sasha didn't win--but she did get a silver. Sasha, sadly, is known for rarely putting together two clean programs in one competition. She is soooooo talented, a gorgeous skater, but her nerves or something get to her. She gets a lot of silvers, and she should be bringing home golds. But she's fantastic anyway, and we love her, and YAY SASHA for winning the silver!

I so love her but you know what I do not love? I do not love the new scoring system. It seems to have reduced choreography to just skating inbetween turns which is, well, just, not at all interesting to watch. If the trend continues I think we may see singles ice dancing.

It's all quantifiable now--points are assigned to everything as opposed to voting with your heart. Under this system, Oksana Baiul would've lost to Nancy Kerrigan, and I much preferred OB. OTOH, its transparency reduces well-regarded skaters who skate poorly being held up.

I dunno. I think the new system can definitely still be improved.

It really affects the artistry. Seth and I were saying that it is like watching the difference between the women's floor in gymnastics and the men's. This is starting to look like the men's. I do not like the idea of popping off jumps to gain quantifiable points because it takes the focus off the artistry and the grace.

Is there any other sport that takes artisty into consideration? I lost interest in figure skating years aho because it didn't seem fair to me that artistry had a part in determining the superior athlete.

Gymnastics. There you are working out of a certain amount of points based on the difficulty of your routine but whether you get them has to do a lot with your artistry. I think starting the ice skaters with a high based on difficulty and then ticking down from there would make more sense than what they are doing now.

Ice skating is not just about landing jumps. There could be a sport called ice jumping and it would focus on that alone.

What exactly is the criteria by which they judge artistry? I didn't watch figure skating this year, but when I used to watch it the commentators would make vague references to a skater's artistry without ever really explaining what it is. Is it something subjective and determined by a judge's taste? Are costume and music selection factors by which an athlete is judged?
