On All That Chat, some posters were talking about the movie version of 1776 (one of my favorite musicals). It was on Broadway in the late '60s, and filmed in the early '70s but on the version most people have seen, the wonderful song "Cool, Cool Considerate Men" is not seen--in fact, a lot that was on stage is cut from this version. Here's why. Can you believe the asshole CUT IT? Can you fucking believe that? Hey, let's make a musical about the events leading up to the Declaration of Independence...and remove one half of the debate. It's the '70s--drama doesn't need conflict! It's especially stupid to cut that song because that encapsulates the Conservatives' argument--they had a valid argument too, and the play presents that. I don't think they come off badly; even Rutledge makes some excellent points with "Molasses to Rum" about the hypocrisy of pointing fingers at the South, where it was the Triangle Trade. So why cut it? What really angers me is that the asshole burned it. Fuck right off and die, Jack Warner. I hope you suffocate trying to breathe with your nose stuck up Nixon's butt. I'm glad someone went behind his back and kept copies.
