Fox has a new upcoming reality TV series Mr. Personality. The premise--a single woman is courted by several suitors who wear masks so she can't see what they look like. The ad shows a long line of men with masks covering their faces--one guy steps forward and reveals a conventionally unattractive face complete with gapped teeth.
Ha ha! The shallow bitch gets what she deserves! Serves her right for caring about what a person looks like!
This is totally the subtext I get from this and I am goddamn sick and tired of these misogynistic reality TV series that make women look bad. Joe Millionaire really bothered me because the message in that one was loud and clear--the women were all gold-diggers, even though he was lying to them and--this is the kicker--none of them knew about his pretended millionaire status until after they'd signed up for the show. But it's okay to reinforce hateful stereotypes against women. At the time I said the only way a show like that wouldn't bother me is if they turned the tables and had one woman, 20 men, and she was courted while wearing falsies and a wig and a super-tight girdle--IOW, if she misrepresented herself the way JM had, and in such a way as to appeal to men's stereotypical shallowness (appearance) in the way that JM tweaked women's stereotypical shallowness (money).
Well, they got part of it right. It's one woman, 20 men. Only--ha ha!--the woman is still the butt of the joke! She still has egg on her face at the end! Because misogyny is funny! Ha ha! Men aren't shallow, only women are! Women judge men more by appearance--I never knew that! I guess you really can learn from watching Fox television!
Fuckers.
