Stayed up too late last night working on my taxes...I really have to send them out by Friday, I hate waiting until the last minute. I'm already later than last year. I figured out two companies haven't sent me 1099s--I'm going to ask them to whisk them to me pronto. If I don't get them by Friday, I'll send my accountant my stuff anyway and declare the income, saying I'll send along the forms when (if?) I get them. As long as I declare it, even without the 1099, I think I'm safe. Anyway, Alan (my taxman) will let me know.

I guess when I get my inheritance, I'll have a whole new slew of tax issues to discuss with him. Hey, Alan, gotta mix it up a little, I can't just keep sendng you the same set of expenses every year.

Last night, while working on my taxes, I was also watching Miracle on my laptop. I love that movie; I love that story. I didn't see the Miracle on Ice--I'm not sure I even watched the Olympics that year, as my dad and stepmom were not into sports and I doubt they would've watched it. I remember being aware of it--one of my friends was gaga over Eric Heiden. But I don't remember the Miracle on Ice at all (which is odd for a NH town not that far from Lake Placid). I've heard about it ever since--I love reading about this story, and seeing footage of it. 20 college kids--kids--up against a super-trained team of hockey Ubermensch. A team that WAS better than them, the best team in the world. And they beat them. Ten days before, the Soviets had kicked their asses in an exhibition game at the Garden, 10-3. Just ten days before. And yet, when it mattered most, these kids, were able to rise to the Challenge and not only hold off unnumerable shots from the Soviets but score two goals off the greatest goalie in the world, Vladislav Tretiak. (They scored two more goals after he was replaced.) The game in the movie is unbelievably well-paced--the final minute of the game, as the Americans are up by one goal, and everyone keeps looking at the clock and people are actually allowing themselves to believe that yes, maybe--maybe--36 seconds more--just hold them off and the Soviets are furiously sending shots on goal, an amzaing array of shots, and somehow Jim Craig is holding them off. It's unbelievable. Jim Craig owned the last minute of that game. And then finally "5 seconds left in the game--do you believe in miracles?--Yes!" It brought tears to my eyes. That's what sports are about. That's what makes them noble.

I play for...the United States...of America.

Pfeh! A pox on thee, infidel.

But yeah, that's why I really don't care for most professional sports. Shit like that and steroids.

i did watch that game...and although i was very young, i remember a lot of it...

...one of the reasons i love hockey so much is that a team made of mediocre players can win a game against great players if the mediocre players PLAY AS A TEAM and work together...it falls apart if you have one player try to dominate

I confess I don't know much about the game, although I've seen the Capitals and the Rangers play a few times. I know people who love the game, really love the game. It seems to inspire more reverence than other sports.

LOVE that movie. I love sports movies in general but that one rocked. It was recommended to be by my Legal Drafting class when I proclaimed my love for sports movies in general. A number of students said that was a definitive movie of that genre.

One supremely cool thing about it is that Al Michaels recreated most of his on-air calling of the game, but for that final famous phrase ("Five seconds left in the game...Do you believe in miracles?...Yes!") they switched to the actual histoircal tape because they didn't feel they could recreate that moment aurally. You can hear a very slight difference in the quality when they switch over, but it just gives you chills.
