From the Washington Post media column:

National Review's Jay Nordlinger doesn't sugarcoat the verdict:

"Don't shoot the messenger.

"I thought Kerry did very, very well; and I thought Bush did poorly -- much worse than he is capable of doing. Listen: If I were just a normal guy -- not Joe Political Junkie -- I would vote for Kerry. On the basis of that debate, I would. If I were just a normal, fairly conservative, war-supporting guy: I would vote for Kerry. On the basis of that debate."

More from the NR column linked above:

Bush said, "We're makin' progress" a hundred times — that seemed a little desperate. He also said "mixed messages" a hundred times — I was wishing that he would mix his message. He said, "It's hard work," or, "It's tough," a hundred times. In fact, Bush reminded me of Dan Quayle in the 1988 debate, when the Hoosier repeated a couple of talking points over and over, to some chuckles from the audience (if I recall correctly)....

Why did Bush keep requesting a special 30 seconds to say the same thing over and over?...

I hate to say it, but often Bush gave the appearance of being what his critics charge he is: callow, jejune, unserious [my emphasis]. And remember — talk about repetition! — I concede this as someone who loves the man...

Kerry's closing statement was superb — couldn't have made better use of his time.

Hey George--Real life sucks losers dry. If you wanna fuck with the eagles, you have to learn to fly.

Hey.
The last chick who said that took a header into a glass coffee table.

There are still two debates left and what's worse, usually reliable Democratic states aren't quite so reliable anymore.
I personally love the fact that Kerry's been deemed the winner of this first debate, BUT...

We can't claim victory yet. Although it would be great.

We can claim victory on this debate. That's what I'm celebrating. Ha ha ha!!!

You totally read my mind! I was thinking "I should've said 'the only appropriate response to my post is "You're...beautiful" in dubious tones.'"

Maybe I could go as Heather No. 1 to Doug and Stacy's party. Except that she doesn't dress revealingly--interestingly there are a lot of little girlish overtones to her wardrobe. I think Duncan once told me about an essay where someone wrote about Alice in Wonderland overtones in Heathers.

Hmm.
The Red Queen whose favorite sport is croquet.

Yup. Definite overtones.

Since we're quoting National Review, a little snippet from them about winning debates:

More of what Bush camp is noting: How important is “winning” the first debate? Since 1984, when Gallup began asking the question, “Regardless of which candidate you happen to support, who do you think did the better job in the debate?”, only one candidate to win this measure in the first debate went on to be elected. In 1996, Bill Clinton “won” the first debate and went on to be elected President. Candidates Gore, Perot, Dukakis, and Mondale all “won” their first debates, but failed to win election.

Sept. 30, 2004: Kerry 53/ Bush 37 (-16)
Oct. 3, 2000: Gore 48/Bush 41 (-7)
Oct. 6, 1996 Clinton 51/Dole 32 (-19)
Oct. 11, 1992 Perot: 47/Clinton 30/ Bush 16 (-17, -31)
Sept. 28, 1998 Dukakis 38/ Bush 29 (-9)
Sept. 28-30, 1984 Mondale 54/Reagan 35 (-19)

I knew I could count on you...

Of course they're trying to diminish the importance. Because their guy lost.

Considering how gratuitously nasty NR is, I found that column soooo satisfying. I want to smoke a cigarette now.

"Gratuitous nastiness" is all a matter of perspective. They're nothing compared to the bile and venom that's been hurled at the President. And they're not trying to diminish the importance of the debate -- they're citing empirical evidence that the first debate rarely matters. Those aren't NR's numbers, they're Gallup's. If the polls said Bush won, you'd find the same quote in The New Republic, and probably all over the mainstream media.

As for the "win," you might want to check out the Gallup poll's internals. Or perhaps you shouldn't.

Enjoy your cigarette, but remember, there are 32 days of campaigning to go.

Yes, it is. My perspective. Because this is my blog.

*Shrug* And I said nothing about the election. Don't know why everyone keeps trying to stretch this out beyond my gloating about last night. And of course the sheer hilarity of someone from NR--the National Bleepin' Review--being forced to concede it. A ha! [/little boy from The Simpsons]
