Sleeeeepy...
Jul. 24th, 2004 11:25 pmI went to Greenwich yesterday for the RE picnic. Got up around 9:00 am, threw myself together and ran to 30 Rock and got on the van. We got to Greenwich around 11:00 and had a good time for about an hour (I was able to toss a Frisbee with some other assistants) until it started raining...and continued for the rest of the day, with no break. God, I fucking hate rain. It's so depressing. Luckily we had big tents, but still, you don't want to be stuck under tents when you could be tossing around a Frisbee or playing volleyball. It sucked. However, we did have a kickass Mexican band, with three musicians. All three played classical guitar (which I've never really heard before--they sounded awesome) and one of them also played accordian and violin. They were great, the best thing about yesterday. I didn't know any Mexican dances so I couldn't really dance to their music, although I can imitate a little Flamenco. When I was on the ship, we sometimes had Flamenco dancers and I would study them--I was telling some other assistants about this and started to show them some of the moves. The Mexican musicians asked me about that afterwards. They were very charmed that I loved their musicianship so much, and one of them had also done a cruise ship gig.
The food was pretty good--tacos and enchiladas with all the fixins--but still. We were stuck under a tent all day, with nothing to do but wait to eat, and then wait for the vans to show up so we could leave. At least we'll get some nice company blankets out of it. (There's always a nice company gift out of these things.) The van I was on was supposed to come at 3:00 but still hadn't arrived by 3:30, so Leticia and I left at 3:30. What should've been a 1-hour trip took over 3 hours, because of the rain. We were literally crawling along 95 back into the city. It kind of sucked. I dozed off at one point--I was very tired, and not feeling all that great.
I slept as late as I dared this morning, as I had an audition this afternoon. It went okay--my monologue sucked but my cold reading went well. I tend to do cold readings well. After that I walked back to my apartment the long way--I stopped at Chelsea Market and got me sort of yummy brownie cupcake thingie, and then walked up 9th Avenue back to the 40s. At one point I stopped in a Baskin-Robbins and was waiting in line and turned around, and some chubby Latino guy was openly staring at me--I mean, openly staring--and leaning with this smirk on his face. I got pissed and said "Don't stare at me! That's rude" and he said "Ooooh!" like it was cute. ASSHOLE. Fucking asshole. Another similarly annoying incident happened when I was walking back along 9th Ave.--I was walking along and some guy yelled "Hey! Hey you! HEY!" I checked my wallet, my keys (ignoring him the whole time)--everything was where it should be, so obviously he was just an asshole who wanted to get my attention and was pissed that I didn't immediately smile at him. Loser. I don't owe you shit, asshole. I didn't even get it--when I was on my way to the audition, I had on a black velvet tank top, good makeup, tight jeans and spike-heeled boots (it was for a sexy role) but for the walk back I changed the boots to sneakers. I didn't look sexy at all. They were just harassholes.
I got back--meant to go to church but I napped instead. Still tired, don't know why. Got up around 6:15 and decided to go out to enjoy the river. I live so close to the Hudson River--only three blocks--and I don't enjoy it enough. I left my apartment round 7:15 and walked over to the river and then made my way downtown via the walk along the river. Some of the piers have been neglected and are eyesores--rusty and rotting--and some have been restored and have either practical purposes or have been renovated so people can hang out along he river. There's also a pier down by Tribeca--Pier 26?--where you can kayak for free during the summer, you just have to show up and they'll let you take one out for a half hour.
The sun was gorgeous along the water. I love hearing the sound of the water against the pilings. I keep thinking of shows I could do in these spaces.
Eventually I crossed over and started walking through the Village. I was trying to find A Salt & Battery on Greenwich Avenue. Finally found it and had a deep-fried toffee crisp--YUM. God, that was good. I love me some deep-fried anything. Walked back to my apartment.
This city is so, so wonderful in the summer.
