When Anglo-Saxon Eyes Are Smiling
Mar. 11th, 2005 06:42 pmSt. Patrick's Day has just this year made the short list of my favorite holidays (which includes Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mardi Gras in pretty much that order). It's such a great holiday--I mean yeah, it's about drinking but it's also about the arrival of spring, and heritage, and family. It's so cute seeing all these red-headed toddlers dressed up in cream-colored fishermen sweaters and decked in green along the parade route. I love it that the parade airs on NBC, and I love hearing all those Irish songs blaring out from 5th Avenue. A friend of mine always had a party every year in the Plaza on the second floor, overlooking the route. A big drunken party with lots of cops, needless to say.
It never really registered much on my radar until last year, although I always enjoyed the hoopla. I realized I had such a good time last year because I was so depressed last March, and when St. Patrick's Day came, it really felt like spring had come, or was on the way. It lifted me out of that fog--I had a great St. Patrick's Day last year, and as silly as it sounds (I don't have a drop of Irish blood in me), I'm really looking forward to it this year. All that beautiful greeny green, all that lovely lilting music, all that yummy good beer, and a great big snuggly Irish-descent boyfriend to spend it with.
