Happy Anniversary, Ducklings!!!

...CNN Headline news is going back and forth, back and forth between the two big stories right now, Terri Schiavo and Jessica Lundsford. Watching the interview with that poor little girl's father breaking down is more than I can bear.

This case is why we have the death penalty. An evil person broke into someone's house, went to this kid's bedroom, told her not to make any noise. God knows what agonies she suffered before she was killed. I can't bear to think about it. He knew it was wrong; he knew it was illegal, but like every other fucking asshole child molestor out there he didn't care. Fuck him. Fuck him. He deserves to die. I don't care what the rest of the world thinks--I don't care that we're one of the few First World countries left that still does this. Filth like that doesn't deserve to live.

Pray for the soul of Jessica Lundsford; pray for her family.

...snatched from djeber, because he does angry + well-researched and intelligent so well:

...I've been trying to avoid even talking about this case, because I know it's just going to raise my blood pressure, but it's shit like this that makes me want to spew vomit all over my monitor:

A shout of joy was heard from the crowd outside the hospice when news of the House bill's passage came. Among those cheering was David Bayly, 45, of Toledo, Ohio: "I'm overjoyed to see the vote and see Terri's life extended by whatever amount God gives her."

See, it's God extending her life, not those machines that she's hooked up to. Never mind that without that life support, she'd be dead. I wonder if it ever occured to this asshole that maybe she had that heart attack because it was her time, and by keeping her alive, this actually goes against God's will. But of course, that's not the case, because this guy is on God's side. He knows the will of the Lord, after all, and the Lord agrees with him.

A crowd of about 50 people prayed and sang outside the hospice on Sunday. One man played "Amazing Grace" on a trumpet, as a pickup truck pulled a trailer bearing 10-foot-high replicas of the stone Ten Commandments tablets and a huge working version of the Liberty Bell.

Utterly. Fucking. Disgusting. Do these people have no shame (and for that matter, do they have nothing better to do)? They've taken this family's tragedy and turned it into a 3-ring circus.

The way the Republicans have meddled in this case is equally horrifying, not to mention completely hypocritical. After all, Republicans are all for state's rights and government staying out of your personal life, unless it's an issue where they can score points with the fundie nutjobs in their base. Beyond that though, this thing is horrifying because it basically says that the Republican congress is willing to override the courts and the law by whatever means available when things don't go their way.

And of course, the Democrats rolled over, as usual.

I gotta say, shenanigans like that scenario above (with the Theme Park replicas of the Ten Commandments--complete with animatronic Moses!--and whatnot) just make me embarrassed to say I'm a Christian. Why do so many Christians have to act so ignorant? The hell? Why are they making such a ridiculous fetish over this one woman? This is ONE WOMAN. Where the HELL does Congress get off passing legislation to affect ONE WOMAN? This is how my tax dollars are being spent? How come they're not doing something about Iraq where thousands of lives are at stake? Who cares about this ONE WOMAN? This is nobody's business but the family's. BUTT OUT, EVERYONE.

I don't get the whole fetishistic "culture of life" bullshit. I really don't get how people can get sooooooo worked up over embryos--embryos--and yet ignore that embryonic stem-cell research can help living, breathing people who are sick here and now. I don't understand fetishizing 7 or 8 embryos whom, because they're part of such a big litter, will almost certainly have birth defects, like the McCaugheys, and then turning around and calling those babies Gawd's will. Maybe God's will was that you not have a child. Maybe you actually subverted God's will--after all, they did have birth defects, and of course you diverted untold medical resources away from other people who needed them by choosing to have so many children. We'll never know--no one can know God's will. I don't understand that kind of irrational obsession with potential life, when there are actual lives here and now, living breathing people, that need our help.
