New Year's Eve in Hoboken
Jan. 1st, 2005 04:55 pmLast night was fun. Seth and Rachel had a gathering and I got there rather late, around 10:00. I had a difficult time getting home, as Times Square is directly between 30 Rock (where I work) and my apartment. I knew it would be horribly crowded for New Year's this year in Times Square, because of 1) the weak dollar (lots of European tourists) and 2) the warm weather (it was in the 50s yesterday). I ended up having to take the subway to get to the West Side.
When I finally got to Port Authority, I helped a Ukrainian woman who spoke very little English and was trying to get to East Brunswick on New Jersey Transit--where they do not go. I tried to explain to her that another line must go there, tried to point her in the direction of Information, and just decided to walk her through it, including up to the gate on the 4th level. My good deed for the day (which also included another woman who asked me to hold a cake while she bought a ticket--and the frosting ended up on my coat! Yuck).
Anyway, got to Rachel and Seth's and they had quite a well-stocked bar there. I partook of 'pagne and drinks and chatted with Tricia and Alex. Eventually we all left, right before midnight, to walk up to Park Avenue to watch fireworks. I was tottering along in my CFMs and clutching a plastic cup of champagne. We were on the sidewalk and could hear the countdown through people's open windows--so we all stopped and chanted the countdown and then kissed and wished each other Happy New Year. Over on Park, the fireworks were lovely although the presentation was a little haphazard, emphasis on hazard.
After that, Mike, Tricia, Doug and I went to Farside and hung out for a bit. Farside is fun although a bit frat-ty. Loud and beery--the smell reminded me of Dartmouth and W&L.
The streets around my apartment are full of thparklth. They're very thparkly. I love that about New Year's.
