Oct. 7th, 2004 01:22 pmLast night I participated in a focus group put together by an "international cosmetics firm." About 20 women between the ages of 20-40 gathered in a room on the Upper East Side and rated various forms of packaging for lines like Clinique. Estee Lauder, Lancome, Shiseido, etc. They even gave us food--there was a big spread of cold cuts, cheeses, breads and condiments on a table. I had a nice roast beef, Swiss/American on rye with tons of mayonnaise. (Mayonnaise, mmm...FYI, mayonnaise originated in the town of Mahon on the Balearic Island Menorca, off the coast of Spain. I've been there.)
It took about an hour. I gave high marks to a few packing combos--one EL look, and some Chanel, Lancome and Clinique stuff--but it turned out there was a definite consensus on the Shiseido line. It looked very unattractive--one combo had this ugly burgundy menstrual blood-looking design across it that was really a turnoff. I have a feeling Shiseido commissioned the focus group, because we were asked more about their packaging than any other.
Walked away with $75 cash. Can't beat that with a stick.
