Once on this Delta, there was a terrible storm...

Pray for the people of New Orleans. If Ivan hits it directly, it will ruin this beautiful, inexpressably romantic, blurry-edged city.

I love this city very much. My parents met and married there, and my older brother was born there. I dream of moving there someday. I don't want it to slide into the sea.

Re "Ready or Not, It's That Time of Year Again" (photograph, front page, Sept. 14):

If only every child beginning a new school year reflected that captivating look of excitement and delight shown on the face of the first grader in the baseball cap and captured so beautifully by James Estrin.

May that lovely child always take such pleasure in school, and may we strive to inject the rest of New York's schoolchildren with his enthusiasm.

Today begins my pre-Halloween countdown. Up go the pumpkin lights, the haunted house snowbatglobe, out come the pumpkin mug, the pumpkin candy holder...I'll have to download a Halloween theme for my desktop, and find a costume for Tatiana, and buy some candy corn and Halloween M&Ms, and go down to Cox's Farm for real pumpkins to vivisect and turn into pie and bread and all kinds of spiced yumminess. Appropriately, I'm wearing orange and black today.
