Wonderland

On Friday I went to the tanning salon and baked. Nice.

On my way home, realizing it was close to 9:15, I suddenly veered over to the Lincoln Square cinema on Broadway and bought a ticket just in time for Wonderland (out in limited release--I love living in New York). Wonderland is about a series of incidents with John Holmes at the center, he of the 13-inch penis, who was a big porn star in the '70s. He owed money to a drug gang and helped them rob an Arab nightclub owner whom he knew, who immediately figured out Holmes had helped them, and forced Holmes to help him get revenge. It's...a difficult movie to watch, for several reasons. Most of the characters are pretty repellant. There's a lot of violence--the climax of the movie depicts five people being bludgeoned (four fatally) in the head--blood literally covers the walls afterward. It looked like an animal slaughterhouse. And the movie is much more style than substance; the director weaves several different narratives together, like Rashomon. All of this makes the movie compelling, but in an uneasy way, like looking at crime scene photos. And yet there was also a fascination with the life JH was leading--one of the lines is "It's LA in the summer, anything can happen." Yeah. I can see why Dawn stuck around for so long.

I think I'd like to see it again but I'd have to wait awhile.
