Murder at City Hall, II
Jul. 24th, 2003 10:27 amFinally got a little sleep last night. I feel much better today. Thinking a lot about the murder of Councilman Davis yesterday. I'm a little surprised it's not the top story on the NYT website right now--I realize it's kind of cut and dry (i.e., the perpetrator was punished immediately, as it were) but it seems disrespectful. What really bothered me was one of Davis's brothers yesterday, ranting "The system killed my brother! It was the system!" No, it wasn't. The system elevated your brother. He was a minority member elected to a position of power by the vote of the people, to represent them, which by all accounts he did so very effectively. That's the system as it should be. This has nothing to do with the system. A pathetic loser with a gun killed your brother. Sadly, this is a freak who took advantage of your brother's generosity and decency--this is not a systemic flaw. The rant just seemed unnecessarily inflammatory--I realize your brother's dead and you're in grief, but rhetoric like that just makes things worse by making Davis's constituents feel more marginalized.
