laptop Configuration

I configured a system on the HP website. How does this look?

Not bad at all, but if it were me, I'd opt for a slightly slower processor and bump up the memory. 256MB is a minimum these days. Windows XP is a hog. Unless you're doing serious gaming, or photo or video editing, you'll never notice the difference between a 2.4GHz and a 2.0GHz processor (except when you're paying for it!), but you will notice the difference between 256MB and 512MB of memory.

And whatever you do, don't connect it to the internet until you speak with a certain friend who happens to be a security guru :) Default installations of Windows XP are notoriously insecure.

Oh, and lest I forget: I'm jealous :)

Thanks! I will of course insist on commissioning the services of that friend who is a tech seurity expert :)

That tech security expert needs to be tagged and tortured until he provides the services that he is offering. :)

I am still waiting for certain software that was promised back in October or November of last year...

[identity profile] minstrel70.livejournal.com 2004-03-31 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Software which, to the best of his knowledge, he hasn't been invited to come over to install since the initial offer. I would suggest, as an alternative to torture, that you simply open the next virus attachment you receive on that PC. I'm sure the aggravation of receiving countless viral emails from your PC will bring him running with the appropriate software.

Wait a minute... the tech security expert doesn't like to travel to No'Bo because it is in the suburbs (unless it is to attend trivia). The invitation has always been open; I didn't realize that a special invitation to come over to install the software was needed. After all, I do see the tech security expert on a rather frequent basis.

I think it has more to do with the fact that the tech security expert doesn't like to climb the three flights of stairs to my apartment.

I like torture, and can combine it with the opening of the next virus attachment to achieve the proper effect. :)

Of course, the tech security expert would never recommend opening a virus-infected attachment, because doing so would violate the Code of Conduct he agreed to upon achieving the CISSP professional credential. In fact, he would never even joke about such a thing.

NoBo is out in the suburbs, after all, but since the return of several borrowed items will necessitate a trip there anyway, he might be pursuaded to take care of that software installation at the same time...

[identity profile] mysticblaze.livejournal.com 2004-03-31 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Suggestions" are different than "reoommendations". A "recommendation" rates higher and inspires more confidence than a "suggestion".

Regardless, I like my computer too much to get it infected. I have an 80 gig hard drive that would need to be disinfected if that were to occur.

So, when does the tech security expert think he will be in the 'burbs of No'Bo to return the borrowed items and what does one need to do to persuade him to take care of the software installation? :)

Well, since the tech security expert suddenly has a freer weekend than he expected, Saturday might be a good day for it.

[identity profile] mysticblaze.livejournal.com 2004-03-31 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps the tech security expert could also help me fix my closet? My mother has sent all the hardware she thinks will be necessary to do the fix.

You seem to be confusing the terms "tech security expert" and "carpenter" or "handyman." Who do you know that has that variety of skills?

[identity profile] mysticblaze.livejournal.com 2004-03-31 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Not confusing the terms, perhaps assuming that the tech security expert is multi-talented. An overall guru. :)
