(no subject)

Chris came over tonight and hung out while I baked a pecan pie for Thanksgiving. We were watching the news and the whole Michael Richards story was being discussed. CNN had obtained camera phone video of the incident--man, it is just...ugly. It's really ugly. The worst part isn't even the N-bomb, which he just throws out so many times. It's when he says "50 years ago..."--when he makes the reference to something that should never ever be remembered fondly or reminisced about...as in, there are some things worse than the N-word.

Like--where did this come from? We all saw the Mel Gibson meltdown a mile away. But this? Not that I've been following Michael Richard's career all that closely, but that kind of viciousness out of nowhere? I just don't understand.

I'm so sorry those people at the Laugh Factory had to sit through that. Nobody should have to hear that kind of filth flung at them.

His apology (on Letterman) seems very insincere, I'm sorry to say. It just seems mechanical.

Not only that, but apparently someone was using a recording device in a nightclub without permission.

I'm curious what you mean by "we all saw the Mel Gibson meltdown coming..."

I, for one, was pretty damn shocked by that one.

Really? The Passion of the Christ gave me a heads up--when you combine a movie that what I've heard has all the "good" Jews looking white-er, and the "bad" Jews looking darker (note--I haven't seen TPotX, just going on th reviws and articles I've read about it), plus his dismissive denials that his dad's anti-Semitic beliefs might've influenced him in way, plus his professed belief that all non-pre-Vatican II Roman Catholics are going to hell plus (although this has nothing to do with Judaism) his on the record homophobia...after awhile a pattern begins to emerge.

I wasn't too surprised. It's a shame, I used to love the guy and I think he's a genuine talent. :-(

He used the N WORD??

Holy shizza! The bits of footage of it I saw on the news didn't include that.
Man, the guy must be out of his frickin' mind! It is one thing to snap in real life on the street or drunk or whatever, but to be on stage, where you have honed your craft and expose yourself as a biggot?
Yeah, Michael- dead career clean up on aisle 4...

Mickey, he said it like 7-8 times. And then he made a reference to lynching, saying "50 years ago we would've had someone like you hanging upside down..." like, is he NUTS???? Has he gone off the deep end? You don't EVER--EVER, full stop--ever joke about that.

Yes, his career is gone. He'll never recover from this.

*Screeching halt...

...HOLY SH*T.
Yeah, he is done. Wow. What is it with these self destructing celebs these days? Don't they realize they are under the microscope of the media? There is no getting away with anything anymore. Not that I think he should "get away" with this, but, MY GOD, what could he have possibly been thinking? Stupid racist S.O.B.

Here's the thing. This happens in some clubs with other comics, too. Lesser known shitty ass people who believe that being funny is spreading that kind of hate BS around, not even in response to hecklers, as their JOKES. It's never funny. Get some damn jokes. He's been a comic long enough that a friggin heckler shouldn't have derailed him. Talk about suppressed rage. I'm glad he got recorded doing it, and that he is notable enough so that maybe people will finally see that that shit is in no way EVER funny. In any direction about anyone.

He's completely done, apology or not.

I hate it when people think being mean is supposed to be "edgy" and therefore funny. As you say, get some damn jokes. Actually learn the craft. Humiliation and/or belittling is not funny--it doesn't make us say "you know, he might have a point." When MR said those things, and you can hear people reacting, he kind of backtracked and said "it shocks you, it shocks you." Dude, you weren't doing it to be "shocking," to expose our bourgeois notions of propriety. You just lost your shit. You were just being a racist ass.

Exactly. Nothing about anything he said had anything to do with "funny."

yeah, he's outta here. the fact that hecklers made him flip out like that made him look sad in the first place, before he even started n bombing. making fun of people in the audience is one thing. but yeah, RAGE! i love that everyone starts walking out on him, and that the guy turns around and says something like, "maybe this is why you haven't gotten a tv show or a project since Seinfeld."

and then he acts like it's no big deal, but you can see he got punched in the jewels.
