Sex and the City and Twilight

Oh, on the way back I watched the Sex and the City sequel.  I don't get at all the clutching of pearls over how terrible this movie supposedly was.  It's a comedy, guys.  Yes, it's over the top.  Yes, there are lame puns.  Did any of the reviewers ever even watch the show?  At its heart the movie is about being a woman--working, mothering, partnering--and more importantly, female friendship.  I mean, some of these reviews are...unbelievable.  Really, openly misogynistic--the Salon review actually muses that it would be "kinder" for SJP et al. to be "shot in the head or skinned alive by Arkansas rednecks," complete with a graphic of SJP being stabbed.  The posters responding to the reviews just slamming, savaging the appearances of these women.  They're not just "ugly," they're an offense to human eyesight everywhere.  They're all too old, too hideous.  One poster actually quoted her 15 year old son saying "false advertising--not in the city and not sexy."  (Oh, well, if some 15 year old BOY doesn't think four women 40 years and old and over isn't sexy, hand me the razor blades now!)  They're "degenerate," "bitches" (they're called this a lot), "desperate," "frantic." Another poster "forsees" a murder-suicide pact between SJP & Matthew Broderick.  Really pretty creepy.  Disturbing.  I see some of this over-the-top hatred for the Twilight series as well--(I'm not talking legit criticism--I am the last person to defend Twilight's actual literary merit--they're not well-written, but they are FUN.  I'm talking about non-stop ranting).  If you don't like it, DON'T WATCH IT.  See how easy that is?  Do you think spend my time watching and trashing Transformers or whatever fanboy franchise there is out there?  I could care less what someone else watches, if it's just mindless fun--which both Twilight and SATC are.  Oh, but wait, there's another element in here--as one poster on Salon put it:

And for many of the commenters here, piss off, you sexist, misogynistic pricks who can't stand that after 60 plus years of television there's FINALLY a show in which you are NOT the center of attention.

And that is really the crux of the overreaction to Twilight and SATC, IMO.

Nice analysis! The open misogyny really is unbelievable.

I can't really say much about SATC; I never watched the show, and only made it through the first half hour of the first movie. Considering that it's supposed to be a comedy, I didn't even crack a smile once, but I suppose I'm not the target audience.

As to Twilight, are you only talking about the books, or the movies too. I never read any of the books, but from what I've heard they pretty much match up with what you said, i.e., badly written but entertaining. However, because my wife is a fan, I did sit through all three movies, and I can honestly say that I thought each one was more dreadful than the last (and I think Jessica only likes them because they're bad).

I thought Transformers was pretty awful too, and never bothered to see the sequel.

Re Twilight: IMO, the books are worse than the movies. Meyers is not a great craftswoman--at ALL--and her grasp of what makes a plot (hint: not Bella and Edward staring into each other's eyes) is pretty weak. The movies are an improvement because they add plot--the first one expanded the threat of the nomads (the three "bad" vampires who intrude on the baseball game) much more, and all of the movies actually SHOW the climactic battles. If you can believe it, Bella never sees Edward & James fight in Twilight (she's passed out), never sees the wolves take down Laurent in New Moon (which--AWESOME--I just love the wolves), never sees Edward fight the Volturi in New Moon (there *is* no fight, they added that for the movie) and only hears about the fight in Eclipse (makes sense, she's not there, but I love that they show it in the movie. It's like an emo teen version of the battle in The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe when the wolves charge out!).

But for all that, I still like the books. She's tapped into something there and I give her credit for it. And I don't mind if people criticize them, not at all, but the tone of the criticism, the constant harping that you read by the fanboys and whatnot. Please. None of us give a shit about guy franchises. We all have our guilty pleasures. Here's an article that talks about it further (http://www.movieline.com/2009/11/threatened-fanboy-responses-to-new-moon.php?page=all). Some creepy responses (quoted in the article):

“I hate Twilight pretty much as passionately as anything I’ve ever hated before…If you’re a lady and you’re under 21, good on ya. Enjoy what you built. Your dollars and zeal have led to a tonal shift in the cultural landscape. If you’re 35, I hope your holes seal up.”

This is from a guy who, as one commenter said, "dresses up as Darth Vader."

I love how the article itself says:

A lot of bad movies make money every year, but most film sites didn’t complain about it until New Moon arrived on the scene and broke a box office record held by The Dark Knight. Suddenly, writers who had dutifully chronicled every Transformers voice casting and G.I. Joe character poster on their blogs were bemoaning the state of cinema, and though their reactions may not surprise grizzled veterans of the Comic-Con Gender Wars, it’s nevertheless amusing to see.

Cleolinda puts it this way (http://cleolinda.livejournal.com/825036.html):

There's a line between "The Twilight movies are ridiculous and I disagree with their view of the world" and "OMG SOMETHING LIKED BY GIRRRRRRRRRRRRLS." I was glad it didn't outgross The Dark Knight because the latter is one of my favorite movies, not because such an event would shrivel my e-penis, BOYS.

Yes, the SATC movie (the sequel anyway, never saw the first one) is geared towards fans of the show, I can see how you wouldn't enjoy it.

I can't say that all the misogyny surprises me. I try to rememember never to look at the comments section for anything, anywhere. Reading them makes me wish for a killer asteroid to show up.
