A Request

Does anyone have a spare wireless router I can have? I need one and someone suggested posting on LJ.

router

Unfortunately I don't, but I found online bestbuy has some for $50, and radioshack has one for $40. Fairly inexpensive.

No, but this reminds me to bring Office for you!

how soon do you need it?

[identity profile] ceebeegee.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Ideally by Friday (when Chris is next scheduled to be in my apartment so he can set it up). If not by Friday, then no real hurry except whenever it gets here.

oh. Adam and I have two now, but will only have a spare after he sells the place in CO. This is yet another reason I hope it sells quickly.

I just remembered that I have a wireless access point, which is not a router, but could possibly work if your setup currently has a wired router. How do you make connection to the interweb now? Are you plugging into a box that has multiple plugs for other computers? Or is there only one place for a computer to plug into?

[identity profile] ceebeegee.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I make connection to the interweb via:

I hop onto someone else's connection who lives in the apartment above mine. That is, I'm basically stealing their signal, except that they must've wised up or something because the past few days, I've been unable even to pick up that signal.

In my old apartment, I had a cable connection, but whenever it went out I would hop onto someone else's signal until the cable connection cleared up.

So you don't have internet service in your home? You need service in which to plug a router. I thought you were asking about adding wireless to your setup, not setting up a setup to start with.

[identity profile] actress-in-nyc.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes.
I have cable internet service already set up.

[identity profile] planga.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Then I'll ask you. How do you connect? Is it directly into the cable box, or is there an intermediate box into which you could plug in multiple network cables?

If the latter, you have a router, and we can use my access point. If the former, we need to get a hold of a router.

an intermediate box into which you could plug in multiple network cables, which is hooked up to my desktop computer.

I don't have a cable box.

Will you be home tomorrow night? It would be peachy keen if I can have everything set up before Clara arrives so that we can simply rocket out of the city on our trip.

Let me know when is good to stop by (if there is such a time).

[identity profile] actress-in-nyc.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
I should be home by 7pm.
When are you coming by?

[identity profile] planga.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometime roundabout 7pm. I have the day off of work, so I gots lots of free time.

I have a spare wired router. Who needs multifunction devices?

[identity profile] ceebeegee.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Is a wired router the same thing as a wireless router--do you have what I need? (Sorry if I sound dense!)

If so, can you stop by rehearsal at DeBaun tonight to give it to me?

[identity profile] walltack.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
A wireless router is basically a multifunction device consisting of a wireless access point and a router built into the same piece of hardware. Chris has an access point and I have a router. Using both of these together will accomplish the same thing. I will bring it by DeBaun.

[identity profile] ceebeegee.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! You rock. I'll be there by 7:15--just pop into the auditorium, I'll be the small blond in pink ordering everyone around.

[identity profile] planga.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Coolies, I'll bring my access point and we should be able to get this going. It may take a little longer... setting up two devices instead of one, but if Elizabeth if there before you arrive maybe all can be finished before you show up.

[identity profile] planga.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Which means I should swing by DeBaun tonight as well.

[identity profile] ceebeegee.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I guess you didn't stop by. Anyway, I will be back at the apartment by 8:00 with the rental car so if you arrive after 7 but before 8, that should be fine.

[identity profile] planga.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was most of the way there when I realized that you'd probably go home last night, and that would be better.

A bitter side note is that on the way, I saw somebody had thrown out a stack of vinyl records which I meant to look through on my way back. On my way back, I saw somebody else leafing through them, then walking away with a stack. As I neared, I so the guy had taken them ALL!

I do, I just need to track it down. I think it is still at my sister's house in brooklyn. I'll see if I can find it.
