Altar Boyz

Yesterday I had to miss two great possibilities--I was offered tickets for A Light in the Piazza, and I also hoped to see Alex in Falsettos in Jersey City (Alex and little Joe from Eternity). But I was supposed to shoot one last scene (a shot really) from the indie that I shot in Hopatcong in January--the guy was going to be at my apartment around 1:00 and we weren't finished until a little past 2:00. So, no go on either show. After Joe (indie director) left, I walked up to the tanning salon in the lovely, lovely weather. I was actually HOT after awhile. Hot! I love it.

Last night I saw Altar Boyz at Dodger Stages, which my friend Ryan is in (he plays Juan). It is quite funny, and a great show--the score in particular is quite good. It's about a Christian boy band (with the one token Jewish member)--their names are Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham. (Duncan, you would LOVE this show.) Everyone is pretty good, except for the guy playing Matthew who is just sort of generic. But the guy playing Mark is HILARIOUS. He worked the audience so well (without overplaying it--always in character), after awhile he just had to lift an eyebrow and you'd laugh. He plays this barely-closeted band member who swans about on stage--what makes it great is he never says he's gay, and it's never acknowledged by the others. It's just--flamingly--obvious. I could NOT stop giggling at one bit toward the end when they're singing a song about hell and describing it and everyone's popping up with one word to describe it--burning, torturous, etc.--and naturally Mark pops up and says "Flaming" with this serious expression. Seriously, I've been laughing about that all morning. I'd been planning to do TKTS but Ryan got me comps for it for last night and I asked Abby Katz if she wanted to go. I haven't seen Miss Abby in a while and it was lovely to chat with her. She and Ryan got along great--the three of us went out to Arriba Arriba afterward.

Oh, that sounds like such fun! I've heard nothing but good things about that show. I can't wait to see _A Light in the Piazza_; my voice teacher is the lead and I know she's amazing! Nice night. Those kind are so much fun!

If I can score more comps from Ryan, I wouldn't mind seeing it again. The musical performances are pretty amazing--so much energy.
