Birthday good times--long and detailed
Yesterday was eventful, to say the least. I had another cosmetic promotion thingy from 12-4 in Queens so I pulled myself out of bed, showered and primped, and schlepped myself out to Queens Center where I again extolled the benefits of Celine Dion Notes. It actually is a rather nice scent, as is J. Lo's Glow, believe it or not. What really makes me snicker are the sad, shabby boxes of the American Idol "perfume" which NO ONE is buying. They've been reduced and reduced to the point where they're almost giving them away--no dice.
One annoying thing--the number of people who asked me "How much does this cost?" before looking at the box, where it's prominently displayed.
When I got home around 4:45, I made some phone calls to Susan, Ryan and Tracy, leaving messages about hanging out tonight in Hoboken. Ryan couldn't go last night but made plans for later in the week. Susan could go but needed to make it a pretty early night. Then Doug called, and was all "Yeah, I guess I'm taking you to dinner," sounding unenthusiastic. He said everyone had other plans. I was crushed. It wouldn't have bothered me so much if Duncan and Rachel hadn't specifically indicated they wanted to hang out with me, getting my hopes up. I mean, I don't expect that people have to drop everything and hang out for my birthday--in fact, I've had many birthdays where I didn't do anything--but if they offer...I met up with Susan and said it might be better if she didn't come, since there wouldn't be anyone else out there. Susan is a good friend--she called Ryan over and said "Okay, new plans--we're taking Clara out this Thursday." Lower lip a-quiver, I got on the bus and pulled into Hoboken, calling Doug when I got off. He said "Yeah, come here and we'll figure out what to do." By the time I got to his apartment I was in tears, walking up the stairs and saying "I'm just hurt, that's all."
Well. We entered the apartment and I headed to his room, opening the door--to reveal a shining circle of friends--Paula, Jason, Duncan, Chris (Goatboy), Seth, Rachel--complete with lit up birthday cake, saying "Surprise!" I was truly shocked--I just stood there and sniffled "You guys! I was really upset!" It took me about 5 minutes to change gears, I was just so shocked.
Duncan brought me roses--beautiful, girly, pink, pink roses--and Seth and Rachel gave me an adorable tank-bikini set from peper (where I really must shop, they seem to have the cutest stuff there). It was all very girly and feminine. (Oh, those roses are so pretty--I arranged them today in a vase and they are so pretty. In fact carrying them home a woman complimented me on them, saying she'd never seen such delicately colored roses. Beaming, I told her my friend ("He has very good taste!") gave them to me for my birthday.) Doug was glowing proudly in the background, saying he felt like such an asshole on the stairs and had to stop himself from spilling the beans, telling himself "Just one minute more." I cannot believe he pulled it off--his acting was spot-on on the phone. He really had me fooled--I was a little bit suspicious because when I called in Hoboken, the phone rang four times and I knew he was expecting it, plus it just didn't sound like Duncan to make plans and then bail on them without a good reason, but Doug's acting was so good, so believable I fell for it. (Not of course that his acting is ever not good, but it's different acting in real life, from acting on stage.) I kept telling him how awesome he was--which he is.
Then Doug corralled us all downstairs to Nag's Head where he bought us a round. More fun and conversations and good times. Mike and Tricia showed up and I got to talk to them some more--Mike brought his copy of The Fountainhead, which I've been meaning to read forever. I was teasing him about how certain sections of it are a bit, shall we say, lurid. For a book that helped inspire Objectivism, there's some pretty hot stuff there! His mouth took hers like a fire brand... Got to talk to Tricia as well--she has the cutest smile I've ever seen. Her whole face lights up when she smiles. She should do print ads--it's a very charismatic smile. Also, another birthday present of sorts--White Christmas was playing on the Nag's Head TV! I kept scampering over to watch certain portions of it (like my favorite section, the Mandy "runthrough"). Go, Vera Ellen, you diva dancer, you!! Stutter tap your heart out!
I asked Seth, Rachel and Jason about how they decided when to celebrate Hanukkah--did the original Jewish PTB give it a late December date to coincide with the shortening days (like Christmas) or was the retaking of the Temple actually around this time of year? Rachel said she thought the battle actually was around this time. Later I overheard Doug telling the rest of them how I "totally want to convert." Duncan backed me up--he said no, we love and respect Judaism but don't want to convert. Although I still want to be Shiksa Destroyer Goddess in an animated series.
Cake. I had cake, y'all. I'm still smiling about last night.
Doug is awesome. Everyone is awesome. I love everyone.
