Running Hither, Running Thither

I shot a TV segment today for a show on the Discovery Channel called B. Smith with Style. This woman, B. Smith, is known as the black Martha Stewart--I'd only heard of her once or twice before but then I don't watch the Discovery Channel. Anyway, we shot this segment today at a store on Madison Avenue in the 50s. It dealt with "Fashion for the Ages" and it had one woman in her 20s, 30s (me), 40s and 50s. We got our makeup done one by one (by Catherine Hickland, a TV makeup artist), then a stylist picked out new outfits for us.

I really enjoyed talking to the stylist--her name is Karen Robinovitz and she wrote a book called The Fashionista Files that I flipped through and really liked. We had a great little chat. I could tell I'd met a kindred spirit when we bonded over Lip Venom. She also gave me some tips on where to buy PVC pants for my catwoman costume. I wasn't that crazy with the dress she picked out for me, but she said it was very Sarah Jessica Parker, whose style is not really mine but whom I admire, fashion-wise.

I also had a nice conversation with one of the other models, the 20-something one, an Asian girl named Q. Or Cue. I only heard it--I didn't see how it was spelled. Anyway, she seemed to love my hair and asked me where I got it cut. It turns out she lives on Hell's Kitchen so I gave her my stylist's name and number. She's also a lingerie fitting model and I found out I'm the sample size! (34B) That means I could be a lingerie model! I'm definitely looking into this.

I loved my makeup. I'm all sexed up and looking hot, with smokey eyes and nude-pink lips. Just so y'all know.

After this, I walked over to 42nd between Lex and Park, to interview with a catering company. They liked me, so I can look forward to some extra money--yay! I'm pretty stoked about this--I'm tired of not being able to produce and put on the shows I want. Of course I'll have to give up some weekend time probably but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

After that I went to a go-see (modeling "audition") for an iVillage gig. We'll see.

My feet are still recovering.

Now yon!

And I'll eagerly await seeing you in Vogue!

That was probably never happen--I'm wait too short for that kind of modeling. I've done other kinds though, and I really just like the extra money. I'm an artiste. ;)

Have you done much in the way of artists'-modelling? I should get back into that. I did it in college, and loved it. I just pretended I was Dot on a Sunday morning on Le Grande Jatte, and concentrated... What the heck, it was fun, and the girls in the class thanked me for having a real figure. I think they meant it as a compliment, but I started fasting a lot more often after that... ;-)

I've done a lot of different kinds of art modeling--some posing at FIT, a lot of photography, some sculpture. I've even been in a book, and I'm going to be in another. Most photographers want a skinny girl--I get a lot of compliments on my collarbones and my shoulderblades. (I'm waiting for the underground industry in XXX collarbone action to catch up with demand.) The one sculptor with whom I worked also liked my angles--it's easier to define the figure with those edges. But FIT likes a variety of figure types. Yeah, I do watch what I eat before posing. FIT doesn't pay very much but usually photographers pay a lot better.

It is fun. You're forced to be aware of your body in a way most of us aren't used to. I think it's a great experience for anyone who's never tried it.
