Star Wars...beau-ti-ful STAR Wars...won-der-ful STAR Wars...

They released the special DVD set of the Star Wars trilogy today. I must have it. MUST. HAVE. IT. I called my mother and told her that was all I wanted for Christmas. She said "Oh my" in these motherly, indulgent tones. She knows how big a Star Wars fan I am. She remembers when I was nine and fell in love with that universe, and telling her how the main theme made me feel all excited and want to grab a lightsaber.

I haven't seen the first one since they re-released it in '97 (with that silly modification to make it look as though Greedo shot first. He did not! Han shot first! Don't make Han PC. He was an outlaw, a scoundrel, that's what makes him so cool). But I still remember losing myself as Luke stared at the double sunset, wanting to go there--I still remember staring up at the screen at the tiny Rebel runner, as the Imperial cruiser grew bigger...and bigger...and bigger, overtaking the Rebel ship. "You are part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor. Take her away!"

*Sigh* They're such great movies.

WE BRAKE FOR NOBODY

I got mine today! Amazon was nice enough to ship it two days ago so it would get here on release day. If I wasn't already with Alex, I would totally do Amazon.com.

Exhiliarating, though, isn't it? The first orchestral hit and the big yellow letters? BAM! It instantly jerks you into the movie. That's just exquisite. John Williams rocks my ass. I often wonder what someone like Beethoven or Stravinsky would have thought of the Main Theme.

I'm really excited about seeing all these movies in widescreen - I don't think I have since I saw the Special Edition in theaters.

The score is fantastic. All the themes are great--Luke's theme (the Main one), the March of the Jedi Knights (and the ballad version of it when Luke is gazing at the twin suns), Princess Leia's theme (especially when they use the uptempo version when Ben is killed--"NO!!"), the Coronation theme (love all those warm strings humming with approval).

Beethoven probably would've liked it. Stravinsky's work doesn't have much in common with John Williams, who is very much in the tradition of European tonality (Stravinsky really pushed the boundaries of tonality with stuff like Pierrot Lunaire).

Are they going to re-release Episodes 4-6 in the theaters anytime soon?

Oh, the throne room... *sigh* Such a triumphant conclusion. Such glorious revelry in what turns out to be only a temporary high for the alliance. Jedi doesn't quite achieve that same high.

I don't know of a plan to rerelease the original trilogy... maybe they'll do some 30th anniversary thing in 2007.

I imagine that when Revenge Of The Sith (shudder) comes out, there will be some theatres running marathons of all six installments.

Man, I'm getting all misty-eyed just reading this thread. I have some of the music from the films as mp3's, and I listen to them from time to time - the attack on the Death Star, the attack on Hoth, the carbon freezing chamber, the asteroid field, the sail barge battle, the battle on Endor. I love the music from these movies.

I'm probably also going to put the DVD collection on my holiday list, although I'm tempted to get it now. I understand that, among the changes, there are now 30% more unnecessary blinking lights and randomly moving objects in the background.

We are all such geeks!!

Man, when I get home, I'm putting on my Star Wars watch (with the droids on the face, bought summer of '80 during Empire mania) immediately.

More Tweaking

Lucas has done more tweaking with the movies, including trying to undo the hurt of Greedo shooting first... now he shoots just barely first. Most changes are not so bad, but the final makes my skin crawl:

Okay, what's weird is that last night when I got home from work, my roommate finally got her piano tuned. Unbeknownst to me, she has the John Williams anthology and she started playing stuff from Star Wars. My favorite she played last night was the Cantina Song.
However, I was seriously scared of her when she knew the words to the Ewok Song.
