Aw. I like this.

From today's New York Times LTTE page:

President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney want us to fear everything. Fear the terrorists, fear Muslims, fear gays.

I am sick and tired of living in fear. I'm tired of plastic bags and duct tape. I'm tired of alerts telling me whether or not I can walk outside. In America, we celebrate freedom and hope, not fear.

The sky is not falling, but the economy is. Terror alerts aren't rising, but our health care costs are.

America should be a bastion of hope. Jobs, affordable health care and respect from the world--these will bring hope, and hope is what prevents terrorism.

I really like that. The message of hope, of light, of the manifest nature of decency and the innate goodness of people resonates with me. As depressed as I get, as hard as I take things sometimes I am essentially an optimistic person. I don't want to fear. I don't want to hate. America should be--is--a symbol of can-do optimism, of light revealed by open proceedings and a free exchange of views and mutual tolerance.
