Yeah, some critics didn't like that as well but I thought it worked. Although Achilles might be an odd choice for an atheist, since his mother was a demi-goddess--but OTOH, everything he's accomplished, he accomplished through his own efforts.

You have to have the gods interfering in The Iliad, otherwise there's nothing to break up the long descriptions of fighting and dying.
